    Recent botnet installed as root

I agree it's very unlikely sshd...I think the last commonly exploited remote in sshd was back in the 90s/Early 00s? If it was sshd, the entire internet would be pretty messed up right now :) I did see some folks suspecting that their admin workstations had been owned, and that...

    Recent botnet installed as root

I do wonder. I recently started hearing about an attack with a similar MO affecting Linux machines: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1235797&page=38 http://www.reddit.com/r/netsec/comments/18ro3c/sshd_rootkit/ I immediately thought of the variety of machines affected and...

    Stack Protector (PaX) for FreeBSD

Depends on the port, but tacking this in there somewhere: CFLAGS+=-fstack-protector-all might work. Watch the code output. BTW everyone, isn't PaX differnt than ProPolice, i.e. I was under the impression that it is an additional patch against the Linux kernel?

    rwxrwxrwx

I considered making a similar comment. I think the reason no one bothers on Windows is that no one can bother, given the fact it's all closed source and undocumented. Or it's a business environment and there's no expectation of doing things correctly, just fast. NTFS ACLs get complex fast...just...

I read that once, and I couldn't figure out if they were trolling or not.

Best use of SSDs in ZFS?

I have seen the same thing with Sandforce etc...They were claiming 20K IOPs on the first generation and getting about 2K. 100K IOPs would be great, but I never actually read the marketing, and assumed something around 10K would be a good guess. Yes, Bonnie++ is a worst case test. In real life...

Best use of SSDs in ZFS?

And here's the 7k3000 mirror with an L2ARC and ZIL. First though, let me express the following flaws in this methodology! -Bonnie++ uses random data equal to 2x RAM amount by default. L2ARC is optimized for frequently used data. In essence, this test is similar to the creation of an iSCSI...

Best use of SSDs in ZFS?

Continuing forward, booted from the old disk based mirror. I've attached a 200G L2ARC using a partition on on Samsung 830, aligned to 4K (starts at 16G, as I reserved some space for a ZIL...except: cannot add to 'system': root pool can not have multiple vdevs or separate logs Ok, no ZIL...

Do you ever get angry at your computer?

Install tmux from ports. Then you can run it first, start buildworld, disconnect the session (or close the terminal) and when you get home just type 'tmux attach' and the results will be waiting :) Much nicer than building stuff 10 times

    IBM ServeRaid M1015 and FreeBSD

The built-in drivers are fine, don't use LSI's drivers for this card. If you have any problems flashing the card, try a different machine (or barring that an older/newer bios) it's quite picky. My desktop worked until a recent BIOS update, I had to use some old machine to flash it this time.

Do you ever get angry at your computer?

From now on, this is what I'm telling accounting when we retire equipment: "Destroyed to prevent spread of disease and contagion" :)

    Stack Protector (PaX) for FreeBSD

SSP/ProPolice works on most ports if you add the cflags (don't do this globally, it's considered dangerous) to the port's Makefile. A global override *WILL* break buildworld. There may be "approved" solutions that allow you to handle this more automatically without making a global override. I've...

Best use of SSDs in ZFS?

No hard drives in that test. I could possibly try the original mirror pool with an L2ARC and ZIL. I could break the SSD mirror, thrash one of the disks as a ZIL/L2ARC, and then reformat/resilver it I suppose. I don't have 4 identical disks, so any raidz or mirror+stripe discussion is...

Best use of SSDs in ZFS?

Bonnie++ is the worst example of a text mode interface I have ever seen, aside from using "eliza" as your default shell. Sorry if this is too many details! 10-CURRENT amd64, 2x CPUs are quad-core 41xx Opterons, 16GB ram, no swap (at the moment, usually 32g), lots of PCIe lanes...

Best use of SSDs in ZFS?

Probably more like 10000 IOPs max, but I agree. But as the numbers of disk increases, so does the possibility of failure. The percentage of disks that must fail for complete volume destruction in a two disk mirror is the same as a four disk raidz6. A triple mirror can easily be created...

Do you ever get angry at your computer?

I threw an Apple Pro Keyboard across a room when I had a disk go unreadable years ago. The control key was detached, and could not be found. I realized I had lost control :) and decided not to throw things I liked.

Best use of SSDs in ZFS?

I'm not sure at all why I'd want to use RAIDZ for any reason. If we set the SSDs aside, I will lose IOPs and redundancy for capacity. Capacity is cheap, if I valued it I would buy more disks. IOPs and reliability are harder to get, so I prefer a mirrored setup (as well as the performance...

    A nice SSD reference

Here is an amazing thread where numerous drives are pushed to write failure. Note as wblock stated that in some tests the drives work until powered off, at which point they die immediately. 6PB on Samsung 830 is nothing to sneeze at though, even if it was on life support...

weird behavior with atheros mini PCIe

Occassionally the embedded controller and/or ACPI disable the wireless without operating system intervention. It's a small stretch that perhaps this is toggling between boots? Try press the wireless on-off function key 4-5 times, trying to connect in between. At least on my netbook, this cycles...

    Home server recommended for FreeBSD

You might want to compare to some of the HP offerings, I was looking at a similar ML110 G7 yesterday. Fujitsu Siemens TX series are also awesome and really well built. HP is probably a little more experienced at the server game, although I do like Lenovo laptops.
