Thanks! I'm going to try it today.

I'm lost please help me not to go for centos

I don't do much with jails, but I can recommend a few ports: For the mail server, look at postfix and dovecot, and for the web server look at apache22. I'm pretty familiar with apache22, and I set up dovecot/postfix once a few years ago, so I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Full backup of a live FreeBSD server?

Hi, What's the best way to do a full backup of a live FreeBSD server? Should I tar the entire filesystem (which directories should I exclude? /proc, /compat, etc.) I have also heard of a utility called dump. Is it better suited for a live system backup? Thanks!

Random dropped connections on local server

    Thanks, I'll check that out.

Random dropped connections on local server

Ah, I hadn't thought to check the NIC itself. I believe our server has two, so I'll configure the other one and try it out. Thanks! Would I just use freebsd-update fetch && freebsd-update install to get the latest version? Or is it more complicated to upgrade to a different major version...

Random dropped connections on local server

Hi, The company I work for has a FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE-p4 server that runs most of our stuff (email, cvs, jabber, apache, etc). At any given time, one or more of our desktop (Windows) computers will either fail to connect, have a dropped connection, or have a very slow connection to the server...

Understood. Thanks. I tried KDE a long time ago, maybe it's time to try again. Thanks.

My sound works with these commands, but how do I configure sound on startup?

Oh, alright. Thanks. I'm going to assume that this is what SirDice is talking about, I'll try it. Thanks. Does that provide any speed increase or benefit if I'm booting straight into my DE? Thanks.

Wow, thanks. You even posted screenshots. I have used gpart a little in the past, I'll revisit it and I'll check out sade. Thanks!

    "best" window manager for FreeBSD?

Thanks everyone. I just don't want to be "left behind." Is gnome2 still actively developed in the FreeBSD ports tree?

Is there a graphical partition manager for FreeBSD?

I've heard of PC-BSD, but I have no problem using the command line for most things. I prefer it for installing software, editing config files, etc. The one thing I always go graphical for is partitioning, but I guess I'll have to get a little closer to the metal :) Thank you for your quick...

    "best" window manager for FreeBSD?

I used to use gnome2 as my WM on Ubuntu, then gnome3 happened and I jumped ship for XFCE, but some things are missing IMO. Now that I'm trying FreeBSD as my primary OS, I installed gnome2, but I don't want to be left behind while other WMs continue to be developed. I have tried MATE and Cinnamon...

Is there a graphical partition manager for FreeBSD?

I am attempting to use FreeBSD as my primary OS (I've just switched from Ubuntu). I love gparted, but it seems that there is no gparted port for FreeBSD. I have searched the forums and everything I've found is either command-based or TUI. Is TUI the best I'm going to get? Thanks!

My sound works with these commands, but how do I configure sound on startup?

alright, I got it! nvidia_load="YES" linux_enable="YES" hw.usb.uaudio.default_channels=6 hw.snd.default_unit=8 snd_driver_load="YES" I had to load the sound driver after I configured the other stuff, otherwise I got a buzzing noise. This configuration works flawlessly.

My sound works with these commands, but how do I configure sound on startup?

Okay, now I've added this to my /boot/loader.conf hw.usb.uaudio.default_channels=6 sysctl hw.snd.default_unit=8 but I get a buzzing sound while booting up. The buzzing stops when I log in to GDM.

My sound works with these commands, but how do I configure sound on startup?

Hi, I've been struggling with my sound for a few hours now, and I'm really close to a solution. If I enter these commands, my sound will work until I reboot. sysctl hw.usb.uaudio.default_channels=6 (then I unplug and replug the USB speakers) sysctl hw.snd.default_unit=8 This is my...

    Mount ext4 RAID1 on FreeBSD 9?

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a suggested RAID1 solution for FreeBSD?

    Mount ext4 RAID1 on FreeBSD 9?

I've been running a FreeBSD server for a while now, and I'd like to try it on my desktop. The only thing I'm not confident about is migrating my software-based ext4 RAID1 from Xubuntu. When re-installing Xubuntu, I would just save a copy of my /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf file, put it in place after...

    Upgrading a port manually
