Any difference in fetching src via...

svn svn checkout https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/release/11.1.0/ /usr/src OR wget/ftp/etc wget http://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/amd64/11.1-RELEASE/src.txz ...and then running freebsd-update to update the src? TY, -bg

    Questions about backup with dump

All good, logical points considering this is a desktop not a headless server. This is the first time I've made a whole system backup of a desktop. In this case, there were issues which make clean installs inefficient- 1) installed ports that take a long time to build on my older FreeBSD box 2)...

    Questions about backup with dump

Hi, I just installed 11REL successfully using this how-to and have done all the configurations and ports/packages installations I want. Now, I'd like to back it up and use it for another install to different-sized disks (via the same how-to) which will all be used on the same system hardware...

Solved Can't get desired screen resolution with xorg on MATE-base 1.18

Thanks- I saw a thread mentioning that, but I don't have that chipset (and tried it anyway after your post) but unfortunately it had no effect either in /boot/loader.conf or /etc/rc.conf. I dropped the call to vt(4) from /boot/loader.conf as per your rec. Thanks- that particular port has been...

Solved Can't get desired screen resolution with xorg on MATE-base 1.18

Hi, I've tried several things mostly found here but cannot get any screen res higher than 1024x768, which is kinda small. xrandr(1) reports max res is 1024x768, but the monitor and a previous installation of GNOME2 (some time ago) support(ed) 1280x1024, which is my desire. I built mate-base...

    Solved Can't start mate-base on 11.1REL

Hi, I installed 11.1REL and built mate-base (1.18) and gnome-keyring-daemon from ports. I have moused, hald, and dbus enabled, and everything seems updated and they seem to be running. No blockages on firewall. proc is mounted. When I start it using mate-session, I see, after a few seconds...

Timezone for postfix - where to set it?

No; I don't use tzsetup. I copy the appropriate file from /usr/share/zoneinfo to /etc/localtime. ..and now I want to copy the same file to somewhere in the postfix installation hierarchy..

Timezone for postfix - where to set it?

I've got postfix-sasl installed (via pkg) & working fine except the time stamp (I can see it for the queued emails) is apparently wrong, despite system time being OK (correct time & timezone). Where do I need to copy the localtime file to set the timezone for postfix? Thanks! -bg

    PF pf syntax for tables

Thanks for checking that. On a 11.0-RELEASE-p2, fresh install, I still get the same error, error, error when running pfctl -vnf on those three table declaration lines. This is weird.

    PF pf syntax for tables

    After looking here, I'm getting some unexpected errors in a simple pf.conf while just trying to use tables correctly- cat /etc/pf.conf table <martians> const { 0.0.0.0/8, 100.64.0.0/10, 127.0.0.0/8 } table <martians_10> const { 10.0.0.0/8 } table <martians_169> const { 169.254.0.0/16 } pfctl...

Closed Is Snowden a Russian asset or a whistleblower?

Lots of really fascinating stuff in these 2 articles- The Kremlin Admits Snowden is a Russian Agent The Real Ed Snowden Is a Patsy, a Fraud and a Kremlin-Controlled Pawn (And please, no political discussions here; I posted this because I thought it was an interesting viewpoint far removed...

Unbearable scp speeds on gigabit network.

You could try rsync from pkg or build from ports tree. It has -e ssh option for encryption.

Solved Mounting NFSv4 directory modifies directory destination permissions

The mapping should work, in theory; however, name mapping does not seem to work on freeBSD NFSv4 unless kerberos is enabled. On other *nixes, yes, the mapping generally works w/o krb; but not on the FreeBSD implementation of NFSv4.

    Solved Where's openntpd?

Just checked pkg for openntpd and it wasn't found. It was there a few weeks ago.. how do I find out what happened to it? I realize it's still in ports, but I like pkg. ;)

Solved Rescuing the ZFS pool from a fried FreeBSD box

Your USB stick might not last very long as a system disk if you run a scrub. Might be better to do a clean install to a new [hard] disk, import the pool, and run a scrub.
