VPN host using VPS with only one network interface

I'm trying to route all network traffic from an iPad through a VPS. I tried to setup a PPTP-VPN host using net/mpd5 based on the explanations in Poptop / iphone problem thread. However, I got stuck and I think the reason may be that I'm unable to create an internal network with my VPS with only...

    Poptop / iphone problem

Let me try to explain better. I'm using a VPS and my provider provided me with a fixed IP (xx.150.50.120) for my VPS, a gateway (xx.150.50.1) and two DNS server addresses that I can use. The problem is that I'm not sure what IP address pool to use and/or which DNS server. I have tried several...

    Poptop / iphone problem

I'm trying to route all my internet traffic from my iPad through my FreeBSD box. So it seems PPTP-VPN could do the trick. However my problem with these instructions is that my FreeBSD server doesn't host the DNS server. And the router that it uses doesn't accept other clients. Any tips how to...

    FreeBSD Hosting/Shared/VPS etc.

Using now thehosthouse.co.uk. Seems to work all fine and can't beat the price: 3 pounds per month using a discount coupon that I found online.

    FreeBSD Hosting/Shared/VPS etc.

I can recommend pcextreme.nl, they offer KVM-based VPS for 4 euro (excl VAT) per month. I was wondering if someone knows a VPS host in the UK with similar pricing (only one I can find is Exonetric, but that is using Jails)?

    lighttpd-1.4.29 compile error

If I don't select "Enable libev support" it does compile. That solves it for now, as I actually can't remember why I have selected it in the past (by default it is off)...

    lighttpd-1.4.29 compile error

When I try to install lighttpd (using an updated ports tree) I get the following compile error: /usr/local/include/ev.h:222: error: expected identifier before numeric constant *** Error code 1 This MacPorts error seems similar, but I don't know how to fix it.

    rtorrent and ipf settings

The router allows all outgoing traffic, it is just not forwarding those incoming ports. But: * when IPF passes all traffic, rtorrent seems to work fine, both downloading and uploading (perhaps it can go faster when forwarding the incoming ports, as you suggest, but speed appears to be ok). *...

    rtorrent and ipf settings

Ok thanks, that sounds logical. But I am still not getting there... I have changed the last line for the outgoing rules #block out log first quick on re0 all pass out quick on re0 all which basically makes all the outgoing rules redundant... And I have added to the incoming rules: pass in...

    rtorrent and ipf settings

I am using IPFILTER and an inclusive ruleset. But I don't get rtorrent to work. If I disable the firewall (i.e. let all outgoing and incoming traffic pass), rtorrent works fine. In ~/.rtorrent.rc I have the following setting # Port range to use for listening port_range = 6890-6999 And in...

    ftp and inclusive firewall

Yes, which effectively means that ftp is blocked. Which contradicts the comment: # Allow out gateway & LAN users' non-secure FTP ( both passive & active modes)

    ftp and inclusive firewall

Yes it seems so... It is just that the comments in the firewall example from the handbook suggest that non-secure ftp should be possible (although I haven't defined a "nat rules files"). BTW you're linking to the same site a I did :)

    ftp and inclusive firewall

I have a FreeBSD machine with an inclusive IPF firewall. However, I have realized now this is blocking (outbound) ftp. There is active and passive ftp. Active ftp is a no-go, as that would mean the client needs to allow inbound traffic on an unknown port. But with passive ftp, it seems the...

    ftp-tls: Failed TLS negotiation

I have now also installed ftp/lftp and that works fine as well with encryption. When connecting with ftp-tls, I see the following in the server log: Mar 25 13:30:17 srv2 pure-ftpd: (?@192.168.1.84) [INFO] New connection from 192.168.1.84 Mar 25 13:30:17 srv2 pure-ftpd: (?@192.168.1.84) [INFO]...

    ftp-tls: Failed TLS negotiation

I have installed ftp/pure-ftpd with TLS support. I created a certificate as explained in this how-to. When I approach the server from a Windows machine with the FileZilla client using "FTP over TLS (explicit encryption)", I get an "Accept certificate?" window, and when I accept, it works all...

    hide ip, vpn or proxy?

Ok I had an error in my proxy settings. Now using: SOCKS Host "localhost" and Port "8080" which was explained here: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-tunnel-traffic-with-ssh/ So seems to be working now. It is a very nice solution!

    hide ip, vpn or proxy?

I basically have my normal PuTTY session (standard settings, SSH using port 22). I go to Tunnels, type Source port "8080", select "Dynamic" (see screenshot), and press "Add". Then I press "Open", and log in. In the browser I try to open a standard http page. I don't think any blocking on the...

    hide ip, vpn or proxy?

That sounds very simple, but I am not getting it to work. So I set up my browser to use http://localhost:8080 as a SOCKS5 proxy. Now before establishing SSH connection, I get following error (as expected): Error 130 (net::ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED): Proxy server connection failed...

    hide ip, vpn or proxy?

Sorry for my ignorance, but could you explain a bit more how this would work? Does this need any server running on the FreeBSD machine? Can I use Putty with the -D option?

    hide ip, vpn or proxy?

I do want to use authentication. And, the external location has a fixed ip address so I would use the firewall as well to provide security. What would be a good VPN server?
