Google Trends's trends on operating systems

Hello, I found some interesting results on Google Trends. It seems there's less interest in these systems. http://www.google.com/trends?q=freebsd http://www.google.com/trends?q=linux http://www.google.com/trends?q=solaris I found similar results on 'Red Hat'. The topics 'centos' and...

    jail open port smtp (25)

Hi, If you do a cat /etc/defaults/rc.conf | grep sendmail You can find all sendmail related default startup options. There's a shortcut, however. I have this single line in /etc/rc.conf to turn every sendmail service off: sendmail_enable="NONE" good luck!

Book: "Creating a SAAS hosting company for $25"

Thanks George, HA is well worth describing. I'm just thinking that the issue with HA and the other 'Advanced' subjects, is that this deserves it's own book. however, I could combine material in 1 book for startup hosting initiatives (with some business goals and a lot of text to help...

Book: "Creating a SAAS hosting company for $25"

I guess I shouldn't have put that title in this thread. what I meant is that the $25 p/month is spent on a VPS for a startup company. once you provide some paid services, you could move to a dedicated platform.

I think OpenSolaris has very nice features that we can also enjoy see in FreeBSD these days; Container, Dtrace, ZFS, etc. And even it's own java-webserver. Luckily we have plenty of alternatives. Currently, I don't think OpenSolaris is good enough regarding hardware support. Furthermore, now...

    Backup Script

I copied pieces of my own mysql backup script. there's variable 'NOW" with a date format, and then the database is stored as "$db.$NOW.sql" # Get data in yyyy-mm-dd-HM format NOW="$(date +"%Y-%m-%d-%Hh%M")" DBS="$($MYSQL -u $MyUSER -p$MyPASS -Bse 'show databases')" for db in $DBS do...

    Ports need stability

How can a messed up port hurt so bad? did you do it - on a live production server - at peek times - without proper backup measures ? I think this thread has no real direction, and doesn't add much to the rest of the awful this-versus-that-OS debate.

Reliacloud is not situated in Europe, but in Minnesota. It has way better pricing on bandwidth than elastichosts. (http://www.reliacloud.com/pricing) I just hope the performance is good. Does anyone have experience with this supplier?
