    2014 Forums Migration To Xenforo

Some links (home, and the menu on top) are not aware, if you visited from an encrypted session from https://forums.FreeBSD.org and redirect you to HTTP. Edit: Now it's better, you're still going to http://www.FreeBSD.org, if you visited from http://www.FreeBSD.org -> Community -> Forums ->...

What file system is best supported by Linux and FreeBSD?

I have no problems with ZFS on Linux, runs quite well. Here are my preferred solutions for external media. ZFS: - good for a file system with working hardware (no defect RAM [1]), otherwise you might get into big trouble - works on some operation systems (no Windows) - POSIX compliant (not...

Solved [Solved] OSSEC jails and PF firewall

Re: OSSEC jails and PF firwall You can install OSSEC on the FreeBSD host and watch the jail directories and have easy access to pf. Pros: - one OSSEC setup - intruder in jail doesn't "see" OSSEC Cons: - Intruder might find a bug in OSSEC log parsing and escape from jail. Or you can install...

    FreeBSD and FreeNAS

sg4rb0, you know where to post your questions to get a qualified answer regarding FreeNAS? The system is mounted read-only and isn't supposed to be modified like a real FreeBSD system. You can't (easily) install software under the base system, only inside jails. Apart from that, Iperf is...

Migrate from ZOL to ZFS on FreeBSD

I updated ZOL and noticed this ZFS Errata #1.

[RESOLVED] ossec vs snort for Jail monitoring

Re: ossec vs snort for Jail monitoring ossec and snort are two different kinds of intrusion detection systems. ossec is a host-based IDS (analysing logs and monitoring files) and snort is a network-based IDS (analysing packets). So use both in conjunction, ossec on you jail host and snort...

    WhatsApp uses FreeBSD

I've payed money for WhatsApp's service, only because they've donated to the FreeBSD Foundation (tough decision, looking with a closed eye at their security record). I'm looking into buying a Neo 9000, as a logical step forward after possessing a Neo Freerunner. :) Paired with TextSecure and...

Migrate from ZOL to ZFS on FreeBSD

Ubuntu 10? Have you compiled ZFS on Linux from source? Which version? spl and zfs-0.6.2? Or do you use a package? Which specific one? I had the same problem, with ZOL, I've created a pool with a version from head and tried to import it with 0.6.2 on Linux to no avail.

    500TB fileserver?

Better look at some data-store with a redundancy level one bit higher (redundancy over network nodes, not disks). like ceph or some other redundant system that spreads over independent nodes (RAIN).

ZFS - FreeBSD / Linux compatibility issue (USB drive)

I've also had some corrupted data as I was trying to import a pool lastly used by a compiled version newer than 0.6.2 from github in an installation of FreeBSD-{9.2,10.0}-RELEASE or a zfsonlinux installation based on {spl,zfs}-0.6.2. status: The pool metadata is corrupted. action: The pool...

Ori - A Secure Distributed File System

    I just wrote a port for sysutils/fusefs-ori, because I couldn't find orifs. m) Or just use sysutils/ori.

    Default FreeBSD security

Andreas Bogk and Hannes Mehnert are porting SoftBoundCETS to FreeBSD.

    NSA data storage

Ceph could be an easier way to achieve redundant data storage (placement group can be specified: rack - datacenter - planet ;)). So moving from RAID to RAIN should mitigate the risk of failing disks and nodes. And storage is expandable as you grow (by adding disks or nodes).

Move ZFS Pool from Ubuntu to FreeBSD

Have you tried to remove your zpool.cache on FreeBSD (it's IMHO a bad idea to copy this from a different systems). And run zpool import poolname again? (Note: without specifying the path) If this won't help run it with option -f (force) or -F (tries to recover the pool with an previous...

    Ext4 on FreeBSD

Get rid of this Linux file system and use ZFS for your external and backup medium on Linux and FreeBSD.

So nobody uses pfSense? There is also another BSD router project.

    badblocks check

I'm using badblocks to do a really long test (with option -p). Letting it run for some days and compare the smartctl output between start and end. Reallocated sector count shouldn't increase, otherwise the drive is sent to RMA.

    badblocks check

    Try badblocks, which is installed by sysutils/e2fsprogs. badblocks -v -b 4096 -c 98304 -p 1 -w -s /dev/DEVICENAME

Has anyone tried getting back at SSH scanner brats?

I learned about net/kippo from http://www.honeynet.org/. Nice resource for honeypots, but I decided against using one and ban attacking IP addresses, which are harvested in my "honeypot" jail (sshd refuses logins at all).

MCA error, but what to do with that?

    Use sysutils/mcelog to decode it.
