    PXE boot pi 4?

I've been reading (and re-reading) these and other documents. Thank you both. There's a lot out there that only talks about x86 h/w, and more that only talks about Linux. Grr. The 15.1-RELEASE that I have on my Pi's doesn't include PXE s/w. There's a directory in /usr/src/stand/i386/ (not...

    PXE boot pi 4?

I've got a FreeBSD server providing tftp/nfs4. With that I can boot a Pi 400 into Raspberry PI OS (trixie) over the network. I'd like to be able to boot the client into FreeBSD. Anyone tried it? I don't have much idea where to begin.

FreeBSD cannot be installed on a microSD card.

Not makes sense. I could boot to ArchLinux if I inserted my Arch Linux MicroSD card into my laptop port without any problem. I encountered with this problem only if I boot FreeBSD.

FreeBSD cannot be installed on a microSD card.

The title of this thread is incorrect. It is perfectly possible to install FreeBSD on an SD card, and I've done that before (for example on a Raspberry Pi). Your computer might not be able to boot from an SD card. And as LibreQuest already said, the SD card block IO code might have problems on...

It'd like WiFi support on my Raspberry Pi 5, please. Thank you in advance, Claude.

    Raspberry pi 5 status

I got FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT snapshot 2026-10-05 network working using the network port (no USB dongle). I am new to FreeBSD and used ChatGPT (and many hours of trial and error) so apologies if this is not the vibe of this forum. I also compiled and loaded the fan and temp modules (not included...

Learning at Scale: FreeBSD Foundation Intern Nimish Jain on Exploring the FreeBSD Codebase

Original article here. Consider this when replying. For Nimish Jain, working on FreeBSD this summer meant getting an up-close look at something he had long been curious about: how large, complex pieces of software work together. A Software Engineering student at the University of Waterloo...

BSD Installation: An Outdated Mess That Nobody Wants to Fix

And a GUI installer is unsuitable for many servers that have no graphics hardware. So if the OS has only one installer, it has to be text mode, or the OS has to give up on being installed on servers and embedded machines. To the OP: You did read the handbook before starting the install, right...

qemu How to emulate a Raspberry Pi 3 and boot FreeBSD?

This shows what is implemented: https://www.qemu.org/docs/master/system/arm/raspi.html May be try some of the things suggested here (but use u-boot.bin for the kernel option)? https://blog.raduzaharia.com/system-emulation-using-qemu-raspberry-pi-3-4973260ffb3e

qemu How to emulate a Raspberry Pi 3 and boot FreeBSD?

I've spent the better part of the day trying to figure this out. But as I'm new to QEMU, I can't seem to figure it out. Writing up all the different ways would take way too long to condense together into a readable form. Rest assured that I've worked my way through all of this and countless...

FreeBSD Foundation Intern Jim Huang Chen on Raspberry Pi Support and Open Source

Original article here. Consider this when replying. When Jim Huang Chen began his internship with the FreeBSD Foundation, he was only finishing his first year as a Software Engineering student at the University of Waterloo. A few months later, he had spent the summer working inside the FreeBSD...

A correct method to update the embedded systems.

Hi, I have a question about a right way to build the world and kernel for armX platforms. I have an AMD64 host, a "big brother" one. I have several ARM-based hosts (Raspberry Pi and Orange Pi) that I use to a number of small tasks. Images for ARM hosts were downloaded, written to SD cards...

Solved RaspberryPi 3B segfaults on 15.1-RELEASE

Running into an issue with segfaults ever since upgrading to 15.1 on a RPi3B (1GB RAM). Did not notice it before, but after upgrading it to 15.1, I did start seeing them afterwards. Been seeing messages like the following: koraga kernel: pid 9807 (pkg), jid 0, uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core...

What Do You Use FreeBSD For?

I use FreeBSD on my work laptop when I’m working from the office or at the data center. The tasks involve working with documents and diagrams, writing scripts, remotely administering servers, and having video calls with colleagues. For these tasks, FreeBSD and my old ThinkPad T530 work...

Other Backing up to an ext4 external disk

In general, I would not use "foreign" file systems (like ext4 on FreeBSD, or UFS on Linux, or NTFS on either) in writing mode. And I wouldn't trust them in reading, but at least reading is not destructive if you mount the file system read-only (no atime updates). Why? Because the foreign file...

What Do You Use FreeBSD For?

Today, I use FreeBSD on two machines. One is my main home server: Network router, DNS/DHCP/NTP/lpr/HTTP/... network service server for the internal network. File server (NFS only, haven't had time to set up Samba), and lots of storage for everything related to normal life (the /home/docs...

What Do You Use FreeBSD For?

I started using FreeBSD around 2014 or so. I presently have a MacBook Air running Sequoia MacOS 15.7.8 here in the home office which I used for email, web browsing and ssh into my FreeBSD machines. The FreeBSD machines here serve as a gateway with firewall, DHCP server, DNS server, internal...
