I make Kpdf open the file separately, but cannot make it work inside firefox.

In firefox, Menu:
Edit >> Preferences
select tab: "Applications"
There is "PDF document" row, select it and find kpdf. Most-likely it'll be /usr/local/bin/kpdf or in KDE specific directory)

I took the OPs post to mean that he wants KPDF to work as a plugin, but perhaps I am mistaken.

Yeah, if the OP wants it to work as a plugin, I'm fairly certain that's not possible with firefox, though it might be possible with konqueror.
