View Full Version : TWM - Tab Window Manager

This is a default wm in Xorg although not so popular.
I love it for its quickness, stability, simplicity...
but it is lack of examples,
and the best tutor is no more than the manual of twm
I have no time studying the tiny toy recently:)
so send some links for sharing (in Chinese language)

Have you tried FVWM, successor of TWM?
It's hard to configure for 1st and 2nd time, but it's wroth it

I use twm. I keep thinking of changing to something more modern, but I've customized it so heavily over the years that it would take quite a bit of getting used to doing things differently.
My .twmrc is at:

It's very easy to set FVWM to act same as in your .twmrc.
If you decide to give a try, i can help you with that.
you ca even make it look the same. lol
some ppl have made fvwm configs that emulate windows look and feel.
I've another seen guys config, that made fvwm look and act same as Mac Os X.
some use fvwm to emulate fluxbox etc....

I think it´s cool that some people still love twm. Its a little sad it´s not developed anymore since it is the default wm in xorg. shouldnt someone be intereted in making it better since it gotta be the most widly spread wm there is :-)

I saw that link a while ago on bsdforums but I could not find it again. That is really awesome. Much like you I am a strong believer in minimalistic computing and use of tools form the
base of the system and XOrg. Fortunately being OpenBSD user I have a great luxury of having most of the tools in the base including three different Window Managers. One of them CWM (Calm Window Manager) is my window manager of choice.. Never the less for a person which is using variety of different operating systems TWM is by a mile the best choice as a window manager.
Cheers,
OKO

The backside of having full freedom to choose which window manager you like is that even when you find a great one you can´t descide which one, and you are left with lots lots of config files and stuff. Perhaps its only me but I keep changing all the time. Altough now I have settled with fvwm2 fo ahwile. Now you tell me there is a calm window manager, I have to test that one too :-)

Hi,
I'm new to freebsd, however I have a major problem. Having been advised to install Windowmaker on an old laptop(IBM Thinkpad 380XD)I founf that I'm unable to install it. The laptop has 48mb of ram and a 4gb hard drive. The
laptop is not connected to the internet so I've had to put the tar.gz file
for Windowmaker and it's dependencies on CD. I copied the files into
/usr/ports/distfiles using the cp-R command. I then typed:
cd /usr/ports/x11-wm/windowmaker/make install clean
After I pressed "return" there was a search for the relevant files on the
Freebsd ftp site!! Obviously it couldn't find the files there because they were in Distfiles. After trying various other options I still have
the same problem. What have I done wrong? Why won't the computer look
in distfiles where I've put the Windowmaker files. Any help would be
appreciated and if any other detail is required I'll provide that. I do
have a lot of issues with the some aspects of Freebsd but I won't go into
that here. Hopefully I can sort things out and move forward.
Thanks in advance,
Soliton

You probably have the wrong version of the distfile:
look at x11-wm/windowmaker/distinfo
and make sure your distfile matches that/those.
Also, you should have started a new thread for this instead of tacking it on to a non-relevant one.

Windowmaker Install Problem.
Apologies for the error re threads.I'm not too clear how to start a new one other than to put a title in place at the top of this reply.
Thanks to those who did reply, and in relation to that:-
1)There are no files in distinfo at ALL(I'll check again to make
absolutely sure).
2)I'm not clear about killasmurf86's reply, I'm aware I need to use the
ports to install the tar files rather than install this as a package.
BTW I had LOADS of hassle with the pkg_add command which I'm still
unclear about so I'm steering clear of using that command for a while.
I'm going to go away and do more checking but any more suggestions would
be appreciated.
Many Thanks,
Soliton

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports.html
It might not help much (it's in Latvian), but
Here i install X with packages [using internet, but principle is the same]
http://killasmurf86.lv/data/download/lv/freebsd/FreeBSD_06_Pakas_un_X_serveris.mpeg
[here i install ports, again from internet]
http://killasmurf86.lv/data/download/lv/freebsd/FreeBSD_07_ports_update_un_paraugs.mpeg
the difference for ports is you need to put archives in your distfiles
, for packages, you download package and use pkg_add to add software [without -r switch]
for packages you also need dependencies packages.
you can find packages on FreeBSD install CD's and DVD (at packages directory)
for example if you mount dvd to /mnt
pkg_add /mnt/packages/x11-wm/windowmaker-0.92.0_4.tbz
as root

I began using twm some days ago. Now that I read your configurations and see the results (screenshots), it seems more configurable than I thought.
cpcnw: Thanks for the new link. Since your ISP could eventually change your IP again, you might want to setup a dynamic DNS account on DynDNS (http://www.dyndns.com), EasyDNS (http://www.easydns.com) or a similar service.
Thus, you can have an URL that is independent from your IP address.

I've never been much of one for taking deskshots, but I took one a few years back of my TWM for a different forum where people were talking about different WMs they use, only with the intent of proving there are people out there somewhere who are content rollin' with TWM. I love the console and ncurses, so, not jaw dropping, but home sweet home.
http://www.queuevonqu.com/mydesk1.jpg
I like that weird, flushed out green that was default on my TWM so I left it. Most of my usual apps up and running, except links to show off the beauty of the text-based goodness (I usually use Opera). In the bottom left corner, I have a borderless, permanently affixed xlogo with a borderless wmcube on top for good measure :)
If you look at my nifty commentary in the nano window, you'll find the slogan for all TWM lovers (yeah?)
"If we were meant to use "icons", we'd still be writing in pictographs!" I even left in my doofy typo: Have fun twice :stud

I installed twm and xterm on my FreeBSD. I found the speed of output in the xterm is very slow, for example, when I use pkg_info, 241 packages, the result took a long time to fully appear. Is it caused by inappropriate configuration of dirver?
many thanks

Yesterday I installed some packages, and it has 253 packages now;
For example, when I use time pkg_info in the xterm , the time it takes is 9.21s:
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5213/5394285617_fd90f8607d_b.jpg
But when I covered part of it, the speed is much quicker. It is 1.43s:

I can't Believe no one brought up Enlightenment. I can't be the only cat on the block who thinks that's awesome can I? Heh. My first exposure so something non Windows, and basically, first time trying out Unix like stuff, was when I bought "Teach Yourself Linux" that 24 hours or less book from SAMS publishing (I have the FreeBSD one too now) and basically, it came with KDE, and Open Linux 2.2 or something from Caldera, the jerks from SCO.
Anyway, I didn't know.... I didn't know crap man lol. Anyway, after that I bought Mandrake Linux 7.1 or something like that, and then I used KDE again, and didn't even realize there were others. Eventually I got SUSE Linux 8.1 Professional, and that was when I finally got my break, and could get online with Linux, and try new things. I saw Gnome, Window Maker, and TWM of course, since SUSE actually cared about that stuff enough to include it much unlike RedHat which I still hate.
Anyway, I bought the "BSD PowerPak" which came with "The Complete FreeBSD" third edition, and FreeBSD 4.0 on CD-ROM. When I finally installed it, I was pretty amazed at just how different it looked (The non GUI boot up screen on BSD is way different looking than Slackware's is what I mean by that) and anyway, I eventually started installing all kinds of Window Managers.
I thought it was the coolest thing, being able to log in, select a Window Manager, and if I didn't like it, log back out, select another one, and keep going.
I still like KDE, and I do like Gnome, just not as much, and then, I saw TWM, FVWM2, FVWM95, FVWM-Crystal, Enlightenment E16, and, then, on Slackware, I found a little Archive of E17. When I installed E17 for the first time, my jaw was on the floor at just how Beautiful it was.
I generally use these:
KDE
Window Maker
Enlightenment (Any version, they look amazing either way)
FVWM / FVWM2 / FVWM 95 (Sometimes) / FVWM-Crystal
Gnome from time to time
TWM sometimes
OpenBox / Hacked Box / Black Box / Flux Box (rarely)
XFCE once in a while.
AfterStep
I could go on, but basically, I use quite a few Window Managers to say the least. I Honestly don't get how anyone could ever be like "Oh I only use Such and such Window Manager" because to me, one of the coolest things is the fact that I can log in, load up something like GDM, log in from that, and while doing so, select which Window Manager I want to use, and if I don't like it, and the Configuration and Themes don't make me like it still, I can log out, pick another one, and keep on going until I find one I want to use.
I LOVE Enlightenment. I'm so glad it has a File Manager for itself now too. To this day, I always find myself going back to Enlightenment, but I basically use Window Maker, KDE, Enlightenment, FVWM stuff, and AfterStep. Those are probably what I use the most.
I still have yet to take the time to really work out ow to configure FVWM based Managers, but I love the way it works either way.

I'd switch to xmonad, if not for 2 things:
When you switch to float layout.... it sux
Java GUI apps aren't displayed properly (You only see white window)
Other than that, I very much like xmonad (use it sometimes)

I'm a fan of e16. Used it post fluxbox/blackbox days at the beginning for about 6 years and still do on occasion. This thread is about Tom's WM. TWM is a pretty niche software at this point. It's cool to see how those who have customized it have.
