xfce install

Hi!

Finally I decided to install xfce 4.6 and I like it but there are one problem - resolution. I choose refresh rate 85 Hz like I have on KDE but it doesn't works. When I restrt xfce it is 60 Hz.

And one question more: I installed xfce from ports (...x11-wm/xfce4) and then .../x11-wm/xfce4-session. Are there any more ports which I should install, please? Does xfce has a screensaver?

And one more: which email client is "popular" on xfce. I have used all the time KMail and I don't like Thunderbird.

Check your xorg.conf.

xfce4-session should already have been installed by the xfce4 meta port.

You might like multimedia/xfce4-media, sysutils/thunar-volman-plugin, sysutils/xfburn.

Nope, install x11/xscreensaver.

Note that XFCE is a window manager, it is not a full-blown desktop like KDE or GNOME. So, there is no "XFCE mail program" like KMail for KDE, nor are there any other utilities typical of desktop managers (like a calculator, screen saver, print manager, editor, etc.).

Just pick what you like from the ports tree, like mail/thunderbird, x11/xscreensaver, x11/xcalc, or any of the dozens of xfce-specific goodies/panels.

Err... The meta port installs print/xfce4-print and editors/mousepad :e

But yeah, it's pretty "clean", which I'm starting to really like having after having used Gnome for many years.

Shit, yes ;) I forgot it's actually one step beyond a "window manager" per se; it's a "lightweight desktop". And I like it very much as well after KDE 3/4 (*clonk*) and WindowMaker (still having tile-related nightmares).

Still looking for a nice picture viewer a la gthumb though. Gthumb has way to many gnome dependencies (which i don't want anymore).

I use graphics/gimageview and graphics/ristretto side by side. Do yourself a favour: install ports-mgmt/psearch, which enables you to quickly search ports for keywords.

I am very long time gqview user and GIMP too.

I am playing a little now and it works good for now. Problem is just refresh rate.

Do yourself a favour: install ports-mgmt/psearch, which enables you to quickly search ports for keywords.
Nothing beats google and a quick look at freshsports ;)
