Hello everyone -
I just now registered, after installing FreeBSD.

A total newbie, except for some ancient knowledge of DOS file structures (somewhat applicable to Unix), and a Unix Cmd cheatsheet, the FreeBSD handbook.

The KDE thingie has been started, but it wants credentials.
I've tried both the Root and my one user to authenticate... No Go.
Possibly something was installed that I have no knowledge of (now I'm showing my newbie-ness)that is bringing up authentication?

What do I do? Where do I start, besides Google?

Thanks, all pointers msuch appreciated!

Well, looking furtherr intot the handbook... its a XDM issue, (I think).
So I went online to the XDM manual:

'password' should be the default. It says, in effect that all users w/passwords can authenticate... I can't?

Are you sure KDE was started? What did you do to start KDE?

Actually, no, nt sure, I took it as so since there's a nice wallpaper behind the Logon window(?).... I do not know the official BSD verbage here, soplease excuse the windows reference.

- I entered /usr/bin/kdm at root.

OK, fixed it.

The problem was after I went back into sysinstall to try a fix. After reading the x11 man., if your user has no password, then the user cannot auth'cate to (whatever) KDE / X11. I must have Ok'd out of the create user section of sysinstall.
