View Full Version : [Solved] exit any desk top, lose all output to screen

I can start any desktop (KDE XFCE, etc), do what I want in that environment. When I leave the desktop my screen goes blank. I key alt ctl f9 (the one I logged onto), the screen stays blank. I then do alt f1 to get back to the "console" and still a blank screen. I can type in reboot and my computer reboots. I do not see the reboot command. The only way I can recover is to reboot!
Any suggestions?

What video card do you have? The newly-released radeon driver is supposed to fix that for the 5000-series Radeons.
Announcement (http://docs.freebsd.org/cgi/getmsg.cgi?fetch=62509+0+/usr/local/www/db/text/2011/freebsd-x11/20110206.freebsd-x11), port patch (http://people.freebsd.org/~miwi/ati-6140.diff).

What driver do you use? Did you build Xorg with WITHOUT_NOUVEAU set?

Xorg was built when the package was retrieved.
Xorg.log shows the following -
(II) Primary Device is:
(--) NV: Found NVIDIA GeForce 9300 GE at 03@00:00:0
(WW) VGA arbiter: cannot open kernel arbiter, no multi-card support
(II) Loading sub module "int10"
(II) LoadModule: "int10"
Could this be a clue?
I only have one display configured. Would showing xorg.conf help?

Rebuild Xorg with WITHOUT_NOUVEAU set. Then edit the Makefile of x11/nvidia-driver to download and install the latest version.

Thanks to all of you for your help. It turns out my driver was out of date. I downloaded the correct version from NVIDIA and it now works just fine.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to mark this problem closed.
