View Full Version : Cannot print on freebsd 7.1 + kde 4.1

Last month I upgraded from KDE 3.5 to 4.1. The printing worked well on 3.5. Now it doesn't print on kde 4.1. Cannot even open "Application -> System ->Manage Printing". I reinstalled CUPS and CUPS base ports and did everything. Still cannot print. Anyone know how to solve this problem?

Based on information you have provided I'd say something is wrong. :OOO
Please tell us whether you can print from CUPS configuration page (web interface on port 631). If not, what is sent into CUPS errors log?
Useful reading. (http://catb.org/esr/faqs/smart-questions.html)

Yes. I can print the test page from http://127.0.0.1:631. But can not print from other files.

Right. Dear everypot. Please read your posting and imagine you have to help this person. Absolutely nothing to start with. :(
What about error messages. See the CUPS error log. Post here if there is something you do not understand.

I don't see any errors here. Well, at least we know now this is not CUPS problem.
Unfortunately I'm not a KDE person, I installed it for my wife, but everything works so I've never done any troubleshooting in KDE.
Maybe you better start a new thread (to get better exposure) pointing out this is a KDE problem.

I can print from Openoffice, but not Kpdf and Ocular.

Shot in the dark ... but isn't there an option in KDE to use CUPS? Maybe it defaults to LPR? Kdelibs can be built with CUPS support.
Anyway, open up a terminal window, start Kpdf from there and see what it tells you.

Thanks. It says

This is what it says when you try to print?
Don't think it has anything to do with your problem. However, it indicates for some reason your Xserver build is crippled. I'd rebuild X if I had such an error despite it seems trivial.

That Xlib error is actually normal if you're running compiz, for example.

When I print, it says:

Dear everypot
I do not know what's wrong there, I'm not a KDE user myself. You should know what options you enabled to build KDE. These messages indicate you have enabled NIS support (do you really use NIS?) but printing support may be missing (AFAIK kjobviewer is part of KDE printing system).

Dear Speedy,
Thanks a lot. I don't need NIS support. I don't even know what NIS stands for. Do you think I need to rebuild KDE with kjobviewer and without the NIS supprt? If I try cd /usr/ports/x11/kde4 && make config, I don't see any relevant options.

As I said, I'm not a KDE user. I do not know if KDE is split into separate packages in ports. Maybe you just need to install another package, like kdeprint or whatever. Good luck.

I just had a look at FreeBSD wiki
http://wiki.freebsd.org/KDE4
It says that printer-applet needs pykde4 and PyCups. But there is no pykde4 or py-kde4 in ports. Only the old py-kde for KDE 3.
