1. When the GDM appears after booting up, only after I select my name to login in to does the lower bar appear with the Language options menu with unspecified in the list and no other languages.
2.Also the background graphic does not fill the screen but leaves a black band on the right hand side, possibly a resolution issue. After login the setting of 1024x768 is applied and the desktop loads. I have installed the full gnome2

OS information? gnome version?

installed from ports?

installed from package?

df -h result?

I think you didn't mount /proc and installed gnome from old packages.

It does. Hald and dbus need to be running. And you need to have /proc mounted.
